What Is This Unschooling?

Why do parents choose homeschooling? In which regions is homeschooling common?

Homeschooling is a progressive movement across the country and around the world where parents choose to homeschool their children rather than send them to a public or private school. Families choose homeschooling for a variety of reasons, including dissatisfaction with the educational options available, different religious beliefs or educational philosophies, and believing that children are not progressing within the traditional school structure.

The homeschooling movement emerged in the 1970s when some popular writers and researchers such as John Holt and Dorothy and Raymond Moore began writing about education reform. They suggested homeschooling as an alternative education option. According to the National Homeschooling Research Institute, there are currently more than two million homeschooled children in the United States, and that rate is growing rapidly, from 7 percent to 15 percent each year. Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states and many foreign countries.

What are the Obligations?

Legal requirements for homeschooling in the US vary by state. Some states have few or no mandatory requirements; others require periodic portfolio reviews or standardized tests.

According to Holt, author of the best-selling "Teach Yourself," the most important thing for parents to homeschool their children is "to love them, to enjoy caring for them, to find their physical presence, their energy, their stupidity, and their passion." For the majority of homeschooling parents, the only prerequisite is a willingness to do so, along with a commitment to the educational process.

How Do Parents Start Homeschooling?

Do parents need an education degree or educational background?

In almost all parts of the country, parents do not need an education degree to homeschool their children. People with young children who have never attended a traditional classroom can begin a homeschooling program when their child reaches school age.

They must first write a withdrawal letter to the school principal or local supervisor. After notification, parents continue to abide by the specific rules of their region.
